Tech is growing steadily all across the UK
The good news is that tech hubs seem to be growing at an impressive rate all over the UK. Brighton grew by 91%, Belfast by 73%, Manchester by 70% and South Wales by 87%. It would appear that regardless of location, towns and cities are proving that they have the potential to become fast-growing tech hubs.
Stack Overflow, the global developer community, reports that the fastest growing tech hub across the UK during 2017 has been the Scottish capital, Edinburgh. An increasing number of those employed in the digital technology sector seem to opt to live and work in Edinburgh rather than London. In the second half of 2017, the developer population of Edinburgh grew by 8%.
And it’s not just coders who are choosing Edinburgh, the city’s population of data scientists grew by 19% over the same period. It would seem that institutions such as The Data Lab, backed by the Scottish government to push forward in the data science sector are having an effect. Another reason for the growth could be the cost of living in London which is forcing many to look elsewhere.
Tech City UK’s 2017 report also shows that Edinburgh secured more investment than any UK tech hub outside of London. Edinburgh’s CodeBase, a digital skills academy, seems to be helping Edinburgh shoot ahead of Glasgow in the tech sector stakes, although Glasgow is growing too.
Workers in the tech sector get paid a good deal higher than the average national salary. Again it’s no surprise that London is the where the highest salaries in the tech sector can be commanded. However, you certainly don’t have to be in London to be paid a high salary in the sector. From North East Scotland to South West England, growing tech hubs are paying impressive salaries.
All of this means that there should be a great deal of positivity about the state of the tech sector in the UK as we look forward to 2018.
